Teaching Rails

Not sure if this will get an answer.I am attempting to teach my 6 year old rails. The problem is I have no idea how to ride them myself. I think I read somewhere to put weight on your front foot. Is this correct?

i don't much about skiing rails... as i don't ski, but you might want to build something in the backyard to help him feel more comfortable w/ it. we have a pvc pipe in the backyard we use as a rail.

He has slide boxes nailed. I figure the rail though would be a different technique. I guess after 3 tries he would probably get it. Little kids are amazing at picking things up.

The rail is only 4 feet long and about 1 1/2 off the ground.

6 yrs old and hitting rails....sooooo sick. Just take him through the park and let him watch other riders. I'm sure there will be guys willing to give some on the snow pointers to the the little ripper.

just stay centered. thats the best advice. feet a little farther apart on rails than on boxes. that will make it easier to learn

Little kids are made of rubber... so trial and error would propably work just fine. I'm partially kiding, but the idea of a little rail in the backyard is probably the best. It's always nice to try new things in a familiar surrounding.

Just start small, same as a box, just keep the weight off of the downhill edges.

Seeing that the original post was in February, did he nail it? What's he going to work on this season?

Well, he had a minor set back. We were practicing on a box that had a small gap maybe a foot from snow to box. On one attempt he came up short and snapped the tip of his ski. Not a big deal to me, but to a 6 year old he was devasted about breaking it.

We found him another pair that was a much better ski, but he was kind of shying away from boxes until late in the year so we never go to rails.

He's in a development program this year so I am sure he will be hitting everything in sight by the end of the year.
