And then the problem becomes investing in gear for one so little, not knowing whether or not it is really 'their thing'. I wouldn't want to splash out that amount of money on that risk, and that's knowing that my little one is a snow bunny and would live out there if she had the chance.

Even if they enjoy it and start showing they have a knack for it, I don't think a three year old is quite ready for it yet. The attention span alone is going to be tiny and add on all the other issues of coordination, wearing out quickly, your patience, getting cold, etc, I just don't think three is going to be worth all the extra hassle when waiting a couple years would probably be more fun for both of you.
