Teaching boarding to kids

my 3 year old is showing some affinity to skateboarding, so I was thinking that next winter we might take her up and get her started snowboarding. Any suggestions? She doesn't do well with instructors. I sort of have the feeling if I just take her up for a weekend on the bunny slopes she'll get it. Kids seem to have a knack for this stuff.

Good luck. I've seen 4 year old rippers out there. They are very, very rare.

I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to learn. I was thinking about getting her lessons at age 6. Kids just bounce right back from falling down like it is nothing. Wish my parents got me into the sport when I was younger.

There are not many places that will teach a 4 year old to board. The problem is they tire quicker then skiing. At least that's what I was told. The resort I ski at won't take them in a lesson until they are 6.

I think that six is about standard. You need to have a certain basic level of coordination for skiing and snowboarding, and that sort of gross motor development takes time, and hence the minimum age.

Is there anywhere locally that you could attempt to teach your child yourself? Getting the equipment to fit might be a problem too.

i have tried to teach a couple 4 year olds how to snowboard working as an instructor. it basically does not work, very rarely will there be a 4 year old with the balance to actually learn how to ride.

I was planning on teaching her myself. Like I said, she's showing some affinity to skateboarding, so she has good balance (she also dances ballet, which may help that). I don't want to push her though. Do you think I should start her out skiing? I haven't skied in like 10 years, though I'm sure I could teach "pizza" and "french fries" and "hockey stop"

I think its a good idea to try both and on skis it might be easier to get acquainted with the fluffy stuff. I think it might depend on the kid but most would pucker out pretty quick. Skateboarding seems to have a easier time for kids since its on wheels, for skiing or boarding on the white stuff they need to use more stamina (or so it seems with me).

Not only that but you are not dealing with the cold with skateboarding. I can see that ballet would be a wonderful aid for her as far as balance is concerned as ordinarily I would just say no way, not possible.

Let us know how she gets on.

A three year old seems way too young. I can see them having a crying fit and melting down before the lesson was even over. But then again, they really don't know what "fear" is and would just go for it.

If they show signs of "this ain't my thing" then I would not push it.
