Summer skiing

I decided to take the Jeep out today and bring my skis along for the ride. I broke trail a few weeks ago so I knew I could easily get up into Montezuma Basin before I had to start hiking. The weather was perfect, a little hot at the bottom but at the top having ski pants and a long sleeve base layer under a t-shirt was perfect. The snow was well summer snow slushy. For skiing in the end of June can you really complain? I also brought my dog Molly along this would be her first ski trip. She did awesome to a her a few turns to figure out what was going on then had no problem keeping a nice consistent pace as we descended. Now onto the pics.

The usually uneventful drive up had one interesting thing today. This bridge had about a 2-3' gully that needed crossed before getting onto the bridge. my biggest concern was traction on the wet wood and getting pushed sideways. The way up the rear tires slide for a instant than stopped. The way down this bridge posed no problems.

End of the road time to gear up and start hiking.

Lots of snow to ski on. You can see three skiers traversing the hill on there way down from the summit.

This is the slope I picked to ski down.

Molly pulling making the hike up easier. I think I might hike to slow for her.

Molly's energy level multiplies when she gets into the snow.

The view from where I started the trip down.

The slope has a decent pitch to it.

About halfway down. The skiing was great.

I will probably be going back up to the same area this weekend so I will be able to check off July. I have a feeling it will not take much effort at all to make it every month.

This is a picture of Montezuma Basin from last weekend. Once the snow melts off the road you can drive to within about 100 yards of where I snapped this picture. I know of people that skied this field as late in the year as September.

My kids would love that! Only difference would be they (I) would build some kind of kicker there so they could get airborne.

My ladyfriend and another friend of ours hit St. Mary's for a Dawn Patrol Mission this morning. She said it was pretty icy but you could move snow in some spots, and an afternoon hike would be well worth it.

Nice!!

The Buells and I climbed Castle Peak today. Michael and I took the skis Brian resorted to boot skiing. The sun pitted snow is a ton of fun. Cruise along and just catch air off the bumps when ever you want to turn. To bad the camera did before getting video of the real skiing but Brian did get a point of view from his boot skiing.

Boot skiing video

I plan on hitting up St. Mary's in the near future.

Let me know when you're gonna hit it, I'll let the gal know and heck, maybe I'll join. Get at me over on MTBR or something, I don't check here that much... especially in the summertime.

Oh! The ladyfriend just accepted a position as the Sales and Marketing Manager for Colorado Ski Country USA! And I threw the gauntlet... we will be skiing/riding every resort in Colorado now that she has access to 2 Medallions!

BOOSH!
