I attemped cross country skiing once in my life so of course I went with a group that stuck to the trails. BUT I can see how it could get dangerous if you were not familiar with the area. Too many factors out in the wild if you don't know what the heck you are doing.

Right, risks such as snow drifts concealing big holes in the land or something like that-that kind of thing really scares me right now. I just don't know the back neck areas around here well enough to know I am not going to fall in a big hole and break my leg.

Snow drifts concealing big holes?

I've never heard of anyone worrying about concealed "big holes."

Crevasses, yes... but big holes?

Do you ski around crevasses?

How would I know that I was skiing around big crevasses-I wouldn't be able to see them because of all the snow!

There is a problem in my garden with subsidence from felled trees that were not removed, and the roots rot and collapse. The garden is badly affected, with holes in various places up to a meter across that I have to fill on a regular basis, probably twice a year. I should get someone in to see to it properly, but never seem to find the funds.....

Anyway, as a result it makes me nervous about dips in the ground. By the time I fill mind they can be 6-12 inches in depth, having been filled once that season already. So what about areas that are not filled (is the worry in my mind). It wouldn't take much to make you stumble, twist your leg and get injured.

I realise I could just be a paranoid Annie and I fully accept that fact.
