Cool Ride Report: CO New Year

Since Mt. Bohemia has a serious snow shortage we made a last minute decision to go to Colorado instead. Plane tickets were quite expensive so we decided to drive. And we all know that getting there is half the fun...

Initially, it was to just be me and my buddy Brett. We would be perfectly comfortable in the Mazda 3. Then his brother Pat was going to join us. Cool, we would be cozy, but still OK. Then his brother's friend Ryan was coming too, and now we have a transportation problem. Then I hear that his brother's friend wasn't going to get off of work until kinda late. So late that it was going to cost us a day on the mountain. I put my foot down.

His friend wisely got off at a reasonable hour, and I was able to borrow my step-something-or-other's Full-Size Rear-Wheel-Drive van with handicapped plates.

So we rolled on through IL, IA, and NB throughout the night at a very comfortable 13MPG. We got a little turned around in Denver, but eventually found our way onto I70 and headed up into the mountains. When we headed up we realized that it was already snowing, hard. Traffic was a mess and it took over 1 hour to reach Loveland from Denver.

Here is a shot of Ryan, Brett, and Pat getting ready to ride in the snowstorm at Loveland.

I'm not sure there are any pics of it. I think I have some from a previous trip... I will look.

Here is a powdery video from Loveland to tide you over.

I will admit that we did this at Breck (at peak 9 and in town, disabled spot on the street right in front of Rasta Pasta) and at Keystone (spots right by the Medical Center, just a few feet from the lift), but I do not have photographic evidence of our evil deeds. Or was it an evil deed? There is a twist to this story coming up...

The reason it was not so unusual to me (and worthy of a picture) is because this is the same van we drove out to CO in March on my trip with my son, my mom, and Neil, my step-something-or-other. I knew the disabled parking was by the Medical Center, because we parked there last time. When we went to Chestnut earlier this year, and Neil bloodied his nose, we had parked disabled too. The guy can ski, but he can't walk... you figure it out.
